How will this residency benefit me?

What will I learn?

Facts tell, stories sell

Don’t talk about your vision, show it.

If you want to shoot this type of work, you need a portfolio that shows you can do it.

A portfolio is more than a bunch of good photos. It tells a story.
It shows your personality.
It convinces brands to hire you.

Each retreat is curated with your portfolio in mind. It ensures you go home with the variety of work you need to show off your talent.

  • How to present your work to brands and clients in the right way

What else will I learn?

We end our collaboration with an exhibition where we invite everyone involved.

We learn how to talk about our work and how to present ourselves.

We use the method I developed during my PhD to work with the local communities, brands, and models.

It goes beyond photography.

We learn from each other’s creative visions and culture.

Involving the communities you worked with and sharing your work with them is a crucial aspect of an ethical fashion documentary.

  • You will learn the best practices on how to involve the local communities you work with

  • How to include this method in your portfolio

  • How to communicate your way of working to brands and clients in the future

LIZA VAN DER Stock
Doctor in arts - founder ion - photographer

Hi I´m Liza, photography is my passion, my life, and fortunately also my job. After I finished my photography education I didn’t know what to do. I loved documentary photography but had no clue how to make money with it.

So I decided to pursue a Phd in Arts to get paid for combining documentary work and research.

I wrote a project proposal and was fortunate enough to get a grant.

During my PhD I developed a method I called
Close Encounters. I researched how to create dialogue through photography.

After four years of research, several exhibitions, publications, and a lot of travel, I became a Doctor in Arts.

But there was a problem…

I still had no clue how to make money consistently outside of the university with my documentary photography.

Until I started to experiment with what I called the fashion documentary style.

Instead of photographing models in the studio, I photographed them in places that tell the story of the clothes and the vision behind them.

Where are they produced?
Who are the artisans that make them?
Which location inspired the designer to make this collection?

I learned that with the right approach documentary fashion photography can tell stories and evoke emotions that most studio work can’t.

I also experimented with untraditional wedding photography. I never liked this kind of photography until I realized you don’t have to replicate what everyone else is doing.

Let’s create something fresh and think outside of the box.
